An Autumn Adventure
OCTOBER 22nd - 26th, SIERRA NEVADA, Spain
GUEJAR SIERRA

Guejar Sierra is a lovely typical Andalucian mountain village, perched on the northwest face of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, overlooking a reservoir at around 1,100m altitude. The village is also the main centre of the municipality of Guejar Sierra, which, along with its bordering municipalities, Trevelez and Capileira, runs along the highest ridge of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and over Mulhacén (the highest peak at 3,482m), making these the three highest municipalities in peninsular Spain. From here, you can enjoy the quaint village, embark on some amazing hikes and adventure activities or simply take time to relax and enjoy the local culture, beautiful food, cheap prices and good weather.

Guejar Sierra is rich in its long standing history, nature and activities. Its existence is intrinsically connected to the many spring water streams that have surfaced in the area since well before the roman occupation times (around 700´s b.c.). The village boasts this phenomenon through its many fountains which you’ll see the locals drinking from. Its initial origins are currently attributed to Moorish occupation, prior to the first Roman/Christian conquest and subsequent re-conquests from both sides. You will find traces of its Moor culture in architecture, culture, food and even in some words and names!

Many historical changes have had an impact on the village, some in ways you can still see today! Look out for the most amazing tree in its main square and try figuring out how old it is, who put it there and why!

Pharmacy

There is one pharmacy a bit further up the road on the left side of the Ayuntamiento building if you are looking at its front door. It is open Monday to Friday from 09:30 to 14:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00.

Shops you may need

There is a stationary shop called “Gloria Tolices Alcala” on google maps, that sells spanish SIM cards for the network Gigi, books, magazines, general stationery supplies and also does printing and copying. It is located on the street “Calle Genil”, right opposite the Ayuntamiento.

There is a tobacco shop on the corner of the main square with the street “Calle Ramon Cajal”.

Supermarket & food shops

There is a small supermarket called “Coviran” where you should be able to get most supplies you might need. It is located in front of the school, a bit further down from the Ayuntamiento, towards the main road, on your right hand side. It's open from 09:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 21:00 on weekdays. There is also a grocery shop - Fruteria Esau (we recommend it for a greater selection of fresh fruit and vegetables!) - right on the left side of the main square (the Ayuntamiento/Church square), almost in front of the church. The greengrocer is open from 09:00 to 14:00 and from 17:30 to 21:00. There is a butcher´s (by far the best place to get meat) called Carniceria Demollete open from 09:00 to 14:00 and 17:30 to 21:00 on weekdays. Lastly, there is a traditional wood oven bakery that makes their own bread on a wood fire, fresh every day called "Marin" located at the bottom right side of the main square which is open from 7:00 to 16:00. There are also two other bakeries on the left side of the main square, “Panaderia Carolina” which brings bread from Granada but is said to be very good and “Panaderia Buenas Migas”. The first is open from 06:00 to 15:30 and from 17:30 to 20:30, the latter might only be open during weekends at that time of the year.
